Sexual trait variation and epigenetics

Does epigenetic variation shape variation in sexual traits?

Does epigenetic variation shape variation in sexual traits?

Earlier, we found that deleterious mutations shape variation in behaviour in black grouse. Some sexual traits in black grouse, such as red eye combs, are however dynamic and vary depending on an individual’s body condition as well as age. Although body condition might partially be explained by genetic quality, variation in habitat quality and other environmental factors are also expected to contribute.

In this project, we will investigate how epigenetic variation (DNA methylation) explains variation in sexual trait expression (behaviour, sexual ornaments, physiology) and ultimately, reproductive success and survival.
